Anguilla today is a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, one of the most northerly of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. It consists of the main island of Anguilla itself, roughly 16 miles long by 3 miles wide at its widest point, whose name is derived from its ‘eel’-like appearance, and a scattering of much smaller islands and cays with no permanent population including Anguillita, Dog Island and Seal Island. This idyllic island is just one-hour east of Puerto Rico and seven minutes north of Dutch St. Maarten by air; and 20 minutes north from French St. Martin by ferry.
There are a number of options available for getting there. Visitors can fly directly into Anguilla's Wallblake Airport from Puerto Rico, or opt to fly directly to St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Thomas or St. Kitts for easy transfer to Anguilla. Ferries are a popular way to travel between Anguilla and St. Martin.
The visitor will find gentle seas to swim in, astoundingly beautiful beaches for relaxation, reflection, contemplation - and beach games, jogs and picnics. The gastronomic delights on offer consist of over 70 dining experiences presented by both world renowned international and award-winning local chefs, and enlivened by drop-by, roadside barbecues and beachside bistros and grills. There are many top luxury resorts and independent spas offering the latest in spa and wellness facilities, services and treatments. Unhurried, uncomplicated and easy to explore, Anguilla invites bike tours and hiking excursions and provides you with a variety of activity choices.
Anguilla's turquoise waters boast seven marine parks: Dog Island, Prickley Pear, Seal Island Reef System, Little Bay, Sandy Island, Shoal Bay Harbour Reef System and Stoney Bay Marine Park. Dive sites include wreck dives, shore dives, mini wall dives, night dives and heritage diving. Anguilla is known for its intentionally sunk shipwrecks, artificial reefs that provide for the enjoyment of scuba divers. The island is home to a truly unique attraction, a 960-ton Spanish galleon (El Buen Consejo) that rests quietly on the ocean floor with her cannons and cargo serving as a silent testament to the Caribbean's turbulent past. The site is an award-winning underwater park (Stoney Bay Marine Park) open to certified scuba divers. Anguilla also boasts a healthy double reef system, where a wide variety of corals flourish.
What better location to take an afternoon beach stroll and leave only two sets of footprints on the stunningly white, exquisitely soft sands. Bask in the sun, swim, snorkel, sail, scuba, windsurf to your heart's content. Explore Anguilla by car, taxi or bicycle (one main road and a handful of traffic lights make it easy). Visit an Anguilla art gallery and take home an original watercolour for a permanent memory of the most romantic time of your lives. And if you have time to spare, discover Anguilla's rich history and culture - visit museums, historic sites, and the many unique churches that dot the island.
