Named by Christopher Columbus on his second Caribbean voyage in 1493, but not settled until 1632 when a group of Englishmen established a settlement and soon began to introduce large scale sugar cultivation, Antigua had by the end of the eighteenth century become an important strategic port known as the ‘gateway to the Caribbean’. Many of its historical sites are remnants of fortifications built to protect it from military threat of invasion. With the arrival of Horatio Nelson in 1784 came the development of the British naval facilities at English Harbour including the construction of Nelson’s Dockyard.
Today, Antigua and Barbuda is an island nation consisting of these two major islands as well as a number of smaller islets, populated mainly by people of African lineage, descendants of those slaves brought to the island centuries before to labour in the sugarcane fields. The graceful architecture of Nelson’s Dockyard, now completely restored as the only Georgian dockyard in the world, is the setting for a more pleasure-seeking fleet; international race boats, recreational yachts and classic sailboats of Antigua’s annual Sailing Week. Above the harbour, at Shirley Heights and the Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre, the colonial past and colourful history of the island is brought to life in an Interpretation Centre.
On Antigua the national sport is cricket and the Antigua Recreation Ground is one of the best places in the Caribbean to take in local, regional or international matches. At the Antigua and Barbuda Museum, devotees can see the infamous cricket bat of Vivian Richards, a native Antiguan and former captain of the West Indies Cricket Club.
If cricket is not your game, then there are a vast number of sports and activities to enjoy while on the island: golfing, tennis, riding, cycling, hiking and birdwatching, to name but a few. The Frigate Bird Sanctuary on Barbuda is accessible only by boat but is the largest bird sanctuary in the Caribbean containing over 170 species of birds. The island has outstanding pink and white sand beaches that continue for miles without interruption on its southwestern shore, while its Atlantic shores are rougher but outstanding destinations for some relaxed, peaceful beachcombing. Island Safari take visitors on an adventure of exploration through Antigua’s scenic countryside, as well as a journey by kayak through the peaceful and untouched mangroves of the north sound viewing star fish, jelly fish and countless fascinating and rare species. On and under the water, there are a number of eco ‘seafaris’ which you can join to discover the amazing ecosystems of the island within off-shore deserted islands, hidden caves and colourful reefs. At Stingray City, calm crystal-clear waters make it possible to swim with the rays in an enclosed inlet protected by a pristine coral reef. In fact, both Antigua and Barbuda are surrounded by well-preserved coral reefs, walls, shipwrecks and shelfs, providing excellent conditions for spectacular shallow diving and snorkelling. Popular destination sites in Antigua include the underwater park Cades Reef and the wreck of the Andes, a three-masted merchant ship that sank in 1905. Kids will love the exciting adventure on offer by the Jolly Roger Pirate Cruise company, who will take you out for swashbuckling family fun by day or by night.
