Though still full of eastern promise, the old Silk Routes have been replaced by global trade that knows no bounds. Asian economic tigers Japan and China, along with India now emerging as a centre of excellence in IT and technology, dominate world affairs mainly through their head-turning economic growth during recent decades. While the ever-inscrutable façade found its expression in the exuberant displays of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China, Asia’s largest state, remains a destination for travellers in search of the truth behind the enigma, opening its borders to tourists keen to witness the geographical wonders and historical treasures that this vast country has to offer way beyond the ubiquitous mass-produced goods and culinary delights which we already know and love. Meanwhile Japan’s love affair with the ‘Hello Kitty’ brand of cuteness along with its image as home to the kamikaze, extreme endurance and the elaborate rituals of tea and geisha girls makes it a place of enormous contrasts which deserve further exploration beyond the cliché. Travel through India and you will find your senses under assault, while taking in the incredible sights and sounds of the Taj Mahal, the Palace of the Wind, the bathing ghats of the holy River Ganges or the luscious and languid backwaters of Kerala, to name but a few destinations within this vast and varied territory.

Mongolia ’s ancient capital, Harhorin, Genghis Khan's fabled city, was founded in 1220 in the Orkhon valley, at the crossroads of the Silk Road. It was from there that the Mongol Empire governed, until Khublai Khan moved it to Beijing. The ancient ruins consisting of monumental walls with 108 stupas surround the Erdene Zuu, the first Buddhist monastery in Mongolia built in 1586. In 1792, it housed 62 temples and 10,000 lamas; since 1990, it has become an active monastery again. Turtles carved from the stone marked the boundaries of the complex. Mongolia is remarkable for its big skies and wide steppes, its varied flora and fauna and in particular the famous takhi, the last remaining wild horses now protected in national parks. The annual Nadaam Festival held in July is the country’s biggest celebration of its equestrian culture, featuring wonderful horse racing as well as archery and wrestling.

From the land-locked steppes, take a flight to the Maldives, a paradise for scuba divers with its perfect palm-fringed tropical beaches and fabulous coral reefs amongst a thousand gem-like islands dotted in pristine turquoise waters. While containing some of Asia’s most fascinating sights, and immense natural beauty with its landscapes of virgin jungle and snow-capped mountains, Burma’s human rights record and strict military regime have meant that it has avoided being overrun by western tourists. Perhaps its mystery only adds to its attraction, well-equipped as it is with all the facilities and with all the cultural richness to make it a superb destination for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the traditional delights of Asia. Cruise down the Ayeyarwaddy River or drift over the pagodas of the ancient city of Bagan by hot air balloon. Explore the jungle on the back of an elephant or indulge yourself in the diving opportunities of the Mergui Archipelago.
