The Caribbean island of Jamaica is a rich cultural mix of African, British, Spanish, Asian and countless other traditions. Having been ruled over by Britain for over 300 years until gaining independence in 1962, Jamaica has impressed its own cultural identity on the world and more recently is welcoming travellers with open arms for laid-back beach holidays. There are countless reasons to enjoy a holiday here, not least the opportunity to sample the wonderful cuisine, sandy beaches and warm climate.
The food and the infectious reggae rhythms that articulate the plight of the Jamaican people are a testament to the traditions and history of the island. This history is fascinating, telling of the Jamaica of the past as a stronghold of slavery for many centuries, with workers forced to toil in the sugar plantations, and the subsequent 1834 emancipation act which led to Jamaica eventually establishing itself as a nation in its own right. It also served to add to the already eclectic cultural mix of Jamaica, the communities of Indian and Chinese immigrant workers who were introduced to carry out plantation work. All this can be seen in the smiling faces which will greet you, and will add the uniqueness of a holiday in Jamaica amongst the other Caribbean islands.
Its natural as well as cultural history is well worth mentioning. Apart from a selection of incredible beaches mainly on the south coast, with seas abundant with marine life, the mountainous terrain of the island provides a lush and tropical habitat for an amazing variety of plant and wildlife species.
The capital, Kingston, is the largest English-speaking city south of Miami and famous as the birthplace of the infectious reggae music that has swept through the world. Tourists tend not to stay here although its array of historical and cultural attractions make it well worth a visit and by night it offers a sophisticated selection of hotspots to choose from if you are looking for atmosphere and entertainment. The tourist trail will take you to the Bob Marley Museum, the National Gallery and Devon House, a preserved historic plantation mansion. Interesting too are the attractions at Port Royal, once the island’s capital city and haunt of pirates until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1692, Spanish Town and the Hope Botanical Gardens.
Montego Bay is the second largest city in Jamaica and the gateway to the attractions of the north coast. Set in a large bay with a backdrop of mountains, it is a hub of shopping and dining and has beaches lined with all-inclusive resorts. Here, you can visit the beautifully restored Rose Hall Great House and Greenwood Great House, and heading out from the town you will come across the historic towns of Falmouth, Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay. Ocho Rios is the cruise capital of the island, with its bay sheltered by mountains and protected by reefs. Here, the attractions are watersports and natural wonders such as the amazing Dunns River Falls, and the streets are alive with markets, shops, restaurants and discos. It is the perfect starting point for a driving tour of the area, with some of the island’s most spectacular scenery on display as well as its most picturesque old port towns.
On the west coast, Negril is attracting growing numbers of travellers with its famous miles of sandy beaches and glorious sunsets. This town was home to gangs of rowdy pirates in the 1700s and rediscovered in the 60s and 70s by groovy hippies from North America. Its lighthouse offers a wonderful panoramic view of the area.
To enjoy the local rhythms at their best, the Reggae Sunsplash and Reggae Sunfest are the two major events hosted by the island in July/ August. Both are great fun for all the family even if the local dance moves might be strictly an adult affair. Other annual festivities worth experiencing are Carnival, the Ocho Rios Jazz Festival and Jonkanoo, the local traditional Christmas celebration.
