A favourite region for the budget traveller offering, as it does, an incredible combination of mouth-watering cuisine, jungle adventure, secluded beaches, fascinating historical sites and a wide range of low-priced accommodation, it is easy to forget that countries such as Thailand and Singapore actually have some of the most beautiful and luxurious hotels in the world. Travel within the region is also easily possible by train or by a good network of flight routes run by low-cost airlines, so your trip could include more than one of its eleven constituent countries. Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand have emerged within the last decades as affluent, newly industrialised countries, shedding their ‘third world’ image. Shopping in the glossy malls or street markets of Bangkok will delight all designer label-junkies as well as those seeking more traditional, locally crafted textiles, silks and trinkets. From the capital, many head north to Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second-largest city and a centre for excursions to the region’s ancient temples, hill tribes and the Golden Triangle. Others make for the gorgeous tropical seascapes of island-studded costlines around Phang Nga Bay and relax in beachside holiday resorts just paces form the turquoise ocean. For those interested in ancient architecture, the city of Ayutthaya and the ruins of Phimai make a good prelude to Angkor itself, which is just a short hop away in neighbouring Cambodia.

Cambodia may still bear the scars of its turbulent history, but is nevertheless a hauntingly beautiful land of wild jungle and unspoilt landscapes, Angkor being just one of its highlights. It is well worth a visit, if only to find some of Asia’s less well-trodden tourist trails. Likewise, Laos is known for the way in which its people have been able to retain many of their old traditions and lifestyle especially in its rural areas, being relatively isolated and undeveloped. Here, you can catch a glimpse of what many of these countries may have been like over one hundred years ago. It is gaining a reputation as an ecotourist destination, with its national parks and numerous rivers making it the ideal territory for mountain trekking, caving and kayaking. Vietnam is a fascinating place to spend a few days just sampling the main highlights, or take in at leisure avoiding break-neck organised tours, and experience its varied geography, stunning cuisine, sublime beaches and great shopping. Not to mention its history, which you can catch up with in many legendary cities such as Hanoi, Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City, and at the Mekong Delta.

Moving south from Thailand you will find that equally tropical Malaysia, the rising star of the region’s tourist trade, is divided into regions that differ in character, each having its own attractions for visitors. Peninsular Malaysia, or West Malaysia is home to most of the Malays and is the location of the bustling capital Kuala Lumpur on its more developed western coast. East Malaysia occupies the northern part of the island of Borneo along with Indonesia and Brunei. In this region, check out the excellent diving opportunities at Sipadan, and around the islands of Labuan and Langkawi. There are nature reserves, jungles and traditional longhouses to be discovered. To cap it all, tour the vibrant city-state formerly a British trading post, Singapore, whose squeaky-clean reputation makes it also extremely safe as well as quite an extraordinary place to explore.
Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago and is home to 230 million people. Through history it has been heavily influenced by foreign traders brought there by its wonderful natural resources, and consists of many ethnic, linguistic and religious groups. What they do share is a wonderful climate, clear blue seas, gorgeous vegetation within stunning scenery. Islands like Bali, Java and Sumatra conjure up images of swaying palms, vivid colours, tantalising dishes and dazzling reefs. And if you just need to escape from the hordes who descend on some of these countries in South-East Asia, then why not choose the Philippines as your destination. Here, you will find the coral-fringed islands and excellent facilities without the hassle and hype. Many who have been there will speak mainly of the wonderful warmth of the Filipinos, who will make your experience truly unique.
